What is the origin of the Pilates Method?
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He was a frail child who suffered from asthma, rickets,
and rheumatic fever. Through the dedicated study of eastern and western forms of exercise including
yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman regimens, Joe became an excellent gymnast, diver, and boxer.
During WWI, while interned in England, he put his fitness interests to work training other camp
residents. He exercised hospital patients by attaching springs to their beds. These novel ideas
led to the system of exercise he named Contrology. After the war he, along with his wife Clara,
opened a studio in New York City, which attracted a large following of dancers and athletes. Now,
over thirty years after his death, his work is still enjoying tremendous popularity.
What kind of training do you offer?
Private sessions on the machines — one person, one instructor.
Semi-private session on the machines — two to three people, one instructor.
Group mat classes — small groups (no more than eight people), one instructor.
How long are the sessions?
All machine sessions are one hour. Mat classes are 45 minutes.
How should I start?
We recommend your first pilates session be a private one. Your instructor will introduce you to the
machines, select the appropriate exercises, and guide you carefully through your routine.
How many private sessions will I need?
We recommend taking at least 2-3 private sessions before moving on to the semi-private sessions.
Because everyone is different, we don’t use a formula. Your instructor will help you decide when it
is time to move. Some of our clients continue with private sessions; others move on to semi-privates
or mat classes quite quickly. Regardless of the type of session, you will always get the personal
attention and the help you need.
How many times a week should I take pilates?
You will progress faster and get optimum results if you come two to three times a week. You can use
any combination of sessions — mat classes, private, or semi-private machine sessions. Once you
become familiar with the method, the pace will pick up and you will be surprised at how quickly you
look and feel better!
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable exercise clothes that aren’t too baggy so your instructor can correct your form
during your workout. You don’t need sneakers, but please wear socks.
Can I continue my regular workouts at the gym?
Many of our clients find pilates is all they need to stay toned and flexible. Others combine pilates
with different type of exercise. If you lift weights in addition to doing pilates, we suggest you do
your pilates session first. We also recommend that you continue your cardiovascular training. Aerobic
activities such as biking, running, or swimming will complement your pilates sessions and keep your
heart and lungs healthy.
